Padre Pio
by Liz Houle “Italian healer, a Capuchin monk and stigmatic. He was a special, unique case as he was the first priest 'marked by God' in two thousand years. Nuns, monks and even laypersons have experienced the stigmata but never a consecrated priest. His phenomena was witnessed and reported by tens of thousands of people.”[i]
One of the first things that stands out in his chart is the planet Saturn, ruler of the Kendra/trikona 4th and 5th houses is placed in his trikona ninth house – outstanding raja yoga. As if that weren’t enough Saturn is also Vargottama and the Atmakaraka of the chart. His Saturn dasa would be a world-renowned event. However, being Saturn, he was severely tested and isolated for much of his life. It was during his Saturn dasa that he developed the stigmata wounds on his hands. The church was extremely skeptical of his wounds and developed various tests to see if he was really mutilating himself. He was constantly isolated and hidden from view with bandages on his hands sealed with wax to prevent any tampering while he was alone. He passed each and every test the tried on him. Upon his death, his hands miraculously healed, the stigmata disappeared, leaving unblemished skin behind. "The vision disappeared and I became aware that my hands, feet and side were dripping blood. Imagine the agony I experienced and continue to experience almost every day. The heart wound bleeds continually, especially from Thursday evening until Saturday. Dear Father, I am dying of pain because of the wounds and the resulting embarrassment I feel in my soul. I am afraid I shall bleed to death if the Lord does not hear my heartfelt supplication to relieve me of this condition. Will Jesus, who is so good, grant me this grace? Will he at least free me from the embarrassment caused by these outward signs? I will raise my voice and will not stop imploring him until in his mercy he takes away, not the wound or the pain, which is impossible since I wish to be inebriated with pain, but these outward signs which cause me such embarrassment and unbearable humiliation" (Letters 1, No. 511) The stigmata occurred during his Saturn/Venus dasa/bhukti, both Saturn and Venus are in the 9th house of higher spirituality and blessings from past lives (purva punya). Saturn and Venus sit with the moon (ruler of the 10th) assuring his world renown but not for himself, but for the spiritual implications (9th house) of his life. One day in 1947, a Polish priest, just ordained, came to the monastery to make his confession and heard Pio say, "One day you will be Pope." Later, John Paul II prayed before the tomb of Padre Pio. His mystical knowledge can partly be attributed to the parivartana yoga between Mercury and Venus (8th psychic house and 9th higher knowledge). His miracles numbered in the thousands. In the tradition of stigmatics, he had the graces of bi-location (being seen in more than one place simultaneously); distant vision; knowledge of the past, present and future life of the faithful; reading of souls; and healing. He suffered continually, with the wounds also on his feet, and it was witnessed that on occasion, while saying the Mass, he levitated. While in the state of mystical ecstasy, he appeared to be catatonic, though at times he was heard conversing with unseen angels. Known as a great healer, he was visited by multitudes, whose donations helped build and support a hospital. Padre Pio died on 9/23/1968. On the day of his death, the stigmata disappeared, leaving a clear and immaculate skin. He was beatified by the Roman Catholic church on 5/02/1999 and canonized on 06/16/2002, Rome at 10.21 AM (time from Italian TV reported by Grazia Bordoni.)No mystic was ever victim of so many attacks by his peers or faced such hostility in the bosom of the church. It was the sheer weight of the mass of people who sustained him. During WWII, soldiers from Europe and as far away as American made the rugged trek up to the mountainous village, and carried the awesome story home with them of the priest who bore the wounds of Christ. Jupiter in his first house is a functional malefic for Libra rising, as ruler of the 3rd and 6th houses. The 3rd house rules the hands and the 6th house rules enemies and health. He was a healer as well as a psychic. Parivartana Yoga (mutual reception) between the 8th and 9th houses, ensures that he would be famous long after his death for his spiritual abilities and wisdom.
